Introduction to peristaltic pump tubing

Commonly used materials for peristaltic pump tubes are silicone, plastic elastomer, polyvinyl chloride, fluororubber, etc. The principle of a peristaltic pump to transport liquid is that the roller connected to the rotor continuously squeezes the pump tube, and the pressure between the roller and the pump head is used to continuously transport the liquid. Peristaltic pumps used in water quality monitoring, laboratories, medical equipment, biopharmaceutical transmission and other applications often need to operate in corrosive environments for a long time. Especially when transporting chemical solvents or liquids with high and low pH values, the peristaltic pump tubes are more exposed to corrosive reagents. The peristaltic pump tube is squeezed with high intensity for a long time in a corrosive environment, which will inevitably affect its self-elastic recovery after extrusion (returning to the full state of the inner cavity before extrusion), affecting the uniformity of the inner diameter of the pipeline. , which in turn affects the delivery accuracy of the peristaltic pump. Therefore, peristaltic pump tubing needs to have precise dimensions, good corrosion resistance, low elastic deformation and excellent wear resistance.
Silicone tubes have stable chemical properties, high elasticity, low elastic permanent deformation, and good thermal stability. It is currently one of the most commonly used peristaltic pump tubing materials in the domestic biopharmaceutical industry. In order to enhance the mechanical and physical properties of silicone elastomers, there are usually two processing methods: platinum vulcanization and peroxide vulcanization. The former is expensive and requires a higher-demand manufacturing environment. , but the inner wall of the tube is smooth, with a high degree of cross-linking, less precipitates, and excellent biocompatibility. It can be used as a pharmaceutical or sanitary grade hose; the latter will cause more or less wrinkles on the inner wall and may interact with some chemicals. It reacts with the product, causing discoloration, and the degree of cross-linking is low, and unreacted small molecular substances are easy to precipitate. It is generally not recommended as a pharmaceutical-grade hose, but can be used in food-grade processes. Most domestic mid- to low-end silicone tube products use this process. Silicone tubing has poor resistance to organic solvents and should be avoided in this area without investigating chemical compatibility. It should be pointed out that not all silicone tubes can be used as peristaltic pump tubes. They must have high resilience, low compression permanent deformation, wear resistance, suitable hardness and other requirements. Domestic silicone tube products suitable for peristaltic pumps are mainly produced by manufacturers in Shandong and Shenzhen. Although platinum vulcanization is used, the production process uses old-fashioned hot-drying tunnel vulcanization, and most of them are horizontal, making it difficult to control high precision and straightness. And most of the raw materials use silica gel raw materials prepared by cracking method, in which the contents of small molecules D4, D5 and D6 cannot be controlled at the source, which will further affect the subsequent dissolution and precipitate levels. Most of the domestic high-quality silicone tubes are imported brands, such as AdvantaPure®, Dow Corning (now DuPont of the United States), Tygon® and other brands. They have a relatively long service life, which can reach about 150 to 200 hours. Most domestic products last around 100 hours, and the certifications suitable for high-end applications are not complete. Another type of tubing suitable for peristaltic pumps is rubber elastomer peristaltic pump tubing: There are a variety of rubber elastomer tubes that can be used in peristaltic pump applications. Correspondingly, they have certain requirements for resilience, hardness, elongation, etc. Generally speaking, the resistance of rubber elastomer pump tubes to organic solvents is better than that of silicone tubes. However, for various organic solvents, it is still necessary to refer to the chemical compatibility requirements of the material to select the appropriate pump tube product. All in all, although the service life of rubber elastomer pump tubes is much better than that of silicone tubes, which can usually reach hundreds of hours, it is difficult to control the level of precipitates due to the large number of additives in the formula. Foreign high-end products, such as British Gradko, American TBL, Newage's Suprene®, and Saint-Gobain's Tygon® brands still occupy the mainstream of the domestic market. Most domestic fluororubber pipes have strong acid resistance and weak alkali resistance. In specific applications, you need to check the chemical compatibility table or do an immersion test. Most domestic fluororubber pipe products are mainly used to transport corrosive liquids. However, due to the large elastic deformation, they are not suitable for use in peristaltic pumps. Most domestic brands are still imported brands such as Masterflex® and Fluran®.
